A Walk to Remember - Rotorua Redwoods Tree Walk

Last week, I ventured into the wild. But not in my usual way. This time I was walking through the magnificent redwood trees, but from around 20 metres off the ground. @treewalknz in Rotorua allows you to get close and personal with the giant redwoods, while also offering a unique bird eye view of the forest floor. Walking over suspended bridges slung between the trees, you can get nose to nose with a 118 year old redwood's mighty trunk, but be sure not to touch as we can damage them by doing so.

And at night, you can come back and explore the suspended bridges and platforms all over again. But this time under the glow of suspended giant wooden lanterns, designed by David Trubridge, a designer who puts sustainability at the forefront of his work. And you can see his with his designs. The wooden lights have been built in a way to reflect the natural rhymes of nature. The wood is raw and the materials used are minimal. It is always cool to see nature put at the forefront with designing a tourism experience such as this. Sustainability is a key pillar.

Walking high above the forest floor is a very cool experience. It is quiet up there. The only sounds are the swaying of trees and the bird song of the forest. And looking over the edges of the platforms which hug these giant trees is kind of exhilarating. You are up so very high. And it does get your heart pumping with excitement. Perhaps don’t look over if you are afraid of heights though ha. As that can be a bit knee wobble inducing. Especially when you venture even a little higher, where you go up an actual staircase in the sky towards a higher level. It is a pretty wild time. Something that couples, kids, families, solo travellers, anyone really will love.

And if you have a little one in a pram, they even have a special pram that they lend out that can travel over the suspended bridges.

This is the kind of ecotourism venture I love. They have built this infrastructure in a way where the trees have not been harmed, you learn about the Redwoods and other flora and fauna as you explore through handy infographic panels, you are completely immersed in nature and the company, Redwood Treewalk, places a huge emphasis on sustainability and putting nature at the forefront. One of their key values is Kaitiakitanga - Guardianship - the protection of this forest is of the utmost importance and is a guiding star to their decisions and business model 💚
