Best Sunset Spots in Hamilton to enjoy this Summer
Who doesn’t love a good sunset? The sky is all aglow with beautiful blazing light, the birds are chirping their goodnight chirps, the air is brisk and smells like summer flings and you look amazing in that golden hour light, so selfies always look on point, am I right?
And when people think of the Tron, perhaps they do not think of amazing sunset views. But let me tell you something, Hamilton has a great number of beautiful spots to watch the sun go down in style. Come with me as I lead you through five of Hamilton’s best spots to watch the sunset this summer.
Tills Landing - Perfect Spot for a Sunset Picnic
My personal favorite location. I have been here more times than I can count and I have been known to count quite high in the past. Tills Landing is nestled at the end of a quiet cul de sac and is popular with local residents.
Tills Landing is great to see the sunset as it is high up and you can watch the sun go down towards the west. Sometimes, you may see some curious cows in the nearby fields who you will discover have tongues like sandpaper if you end up getting licked.
People often pack a picnic, friends or canoodling couples, and sit on blankets and watch the sun go down.
Out west, you can see the wind turbines far out in the distance, which can make for some cool photos.
Dogs are welcome here and it is a popular dog walking spot, as there is a path that goes from Tills Landing to the Taitua Arboretum.
The Hamilton Lake - Ducks and Duck Poop
If you love sharing your sunset with slightly territorial geese, then Hamilton Lake is your go to spot. Because I for one love hearing the hisses and honks from a gang of geese in the air as I watch the sun rays reflect on the lake water. Call it a proclivity.
The Hamilton lake is extremely popular with locals. Runners run circles around its diameter, parents bring their kids here to play and others come and socialise. The Lake is where it is happening in Hamilton.
Sunsets are pretty here. The water reflects the light wonderfully. You can get in your daily exercise while watching the sunset, or settle yourself on one of the many picnic tables scattered around and enjoy a meal with friends and family while watching the day come to an end.
And for any nature photographer out there, the birds look a lot better in the golden light so this is a perfect place to take some nature photos at sunset. The birds that call this place home are pukeko, geese, ducks and coots to name a few.
Minogue Park - The Park gone to the Dogs
I have a personal interest in this spot, as I grew up just down the road from this park so many a sunset was watched here over my youth. And because of that, it has a special place in my heart and maybe it will also nestle its way into your heart if you visit.
Minogue Park is quite a large park that has a playground, BMX track, a lake, a small pond where tadpoles swim in the warmer months and an off leash dog area. There is something for everyone really.
My favorite spot to watch the sunset is on the big field sitting on a grassy knoll or park bench and watching the dogs running around in the warm glow and the last rays of sunset touch the tall trees. It is quite magical.
Waikato River - River Day Dreaming
The Mighty Waikato River weaves its way through Hamilton and there are many spots along its bank where you can enjoy a great sunset moment.
Some of my personal favorites include Hamilton Beach (yes, in Hamilton, our beach is a riverbank…..), in the CBD, Days Park (which is a dog park, so bring your furry friend along for a sunset and perhaps a doggy swim in the river), and behind the Hamilton Gardens.
Choose one or try them all and see the wonderful Waikato River all a glow with a sunset.
Turtle Lake Hamilton Gardens — Turtle Friends and Beautiful Sunsets
Turtle Lake looks spectacular in the livery of the sunset colours. The artificial lake may be small in size, but it is rather delightful to gaze upon especially with its bridge that crosses the water and the pavilion across the way.
Gazing within the water, you may see a few turtles basking in the sun, or koi fish swimming happily. In spring, ducklings can be seen, following closely behind mum and a flock of stunning white doves often fly overhead.
The spot is great to watch the sunset and in summer, why not bring along a meal and have a seat on the grass as the sun settles.
